celebrating contemporary art in Alabama:
THE NATURE OF BEING SOUTHERN
August 14—November 08, 2009 |
The Johnson Center for the Arts is creating a buzz in the Southeast by presenting ground-breaking art exhibitions in a small town. Continuing this effort, the Center's Executive Director, Richard Metzger, working with a grant form the Alabama State Council on the Arts, has organized the significant exhibition—celebrating contemporary art in Alabama: THE NATURE OF BEING SOUTHERN. "This is an exhibition that everyone will enjoy and appreciate, from the art novices to the seasoned art enthusiasts," Metzger says. "A broad range of visual art is represented here, ranging from blown glass, to ceramics, furniture, sculpture, painting, photography, quilt making and installation pieces. Some of the pieces are whimsical, some provocative and all are excellent." The exhibition, for the first time, will establish a survey of works by a uniquely identified group of Alabama artists. All 41 artists in the exhibition are recipients of coveted Individual Artist Fellowships from the Alabama State Council on the Arts. Five of the particpatings artists are listed as Alabama Masters in the publication bearing the name, published in 2008 by the Alabama State Council on the Arts.
A digital catalogue, designed by Jerry Johnson, Chairman, Professor of Design, Troy University Department of Art and Design, will accompany the exhibition. The catallogue forward is written by Georgine Clarke, Visual Arts Program Manager, Alabama State Council on the Arts, with the essay by Tara Sartorius, previously Curator of Education for 21 years, Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts.
